AI models, especially the large ones, eat electricity like candy. Every time an AI model goes through billions or even trillions of calculations! and that demands enormous power.
According to the University of Massachusetts, training just one large AI model can emit up to 626,000 pounds of CO₂. Which is five times more than a car produces in its lifetime.
Training OpenAI’s GPT-type models is estimated to consume over 1,287 megawatt-hours! And it's enough to power 120 U.S. homes for an entire year.
Now imagine thousands of companies training hundreds of such models every year. That’s why AI is bad for the environment. It consumes energy on a frightening scale.
AI Wastes Huge Amounts of Water
Here’s a lesser-known reason why AI is bad for the environment! It's water usage.
AI data centers don’t just use electricity. They also use tons of water to stay cool.
When servers overheat from constant calculations, they’re cooled with water-based systems. A recent Bloomberg report revealed that training GPT-3 consumed over 700,000 liters i mean 185,000 gallons of clean water! Which is enough to make 370,000 cups of coffee.
And that’s just one model. Every chatbot conversation, every image generated, adds to the total water demand. Multiply that by millions of daily users worldwide. And it becomes clear that AI is silently draining our water supply.
Data Centers Produce Gigantic Carbon
To understand why AI is bad for the environment, you need to look at where AI lives.
These data centers run 24/7, storing and processing your every query, picture, and voice note. And to keep running, they rely heavily on fossil fuels.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centers already consume around 2% of global electricity! And AI could double that number by 2030. That’s roughly equivalent to the entire electricity use of Japan.
Bigger AI Models Mean Bigger Environmental Damage
There’s a pattern! Like every new AI model is bigger than the last. The size of AI models is measured in parameters. In 2018, Google’s BERT model had 340 million parameters. In 2023, GPT-4 was rumoured to have over 1 trillion. That’s a 3,000x increase in computing complexity.
And with it, a matching increase in power use, data storage, and cooling. Simply put the smarter AI gets, the worse it becomes for the planet.
Hardware Production Is Another Hidden Polluter
Most people think AI pollution stops at electricity. It doesn’t. The graphics cards (GPUs) and processors used to train AI models require rare metals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Mining these materials often leads to Soil and water contamination, Child labor exploitation and Forest destruction.
So when we ask why AI is bad for the environment, we must include the full life cycle. Like from mining the hardware to running it and finally disposing of it.
AI Encourages Digital Waste
Ironically, one of the biggest reasons why AI is bad for the environment isn’t technical, it's human.
AI makes everything faster, easier, and more addictive. That means more people are online, using more power, creating more digital waste.
AI-generated videos, fake influencers, and endless streaming content are not just fun and are heavy on data and energy. Every extra second of scrolling adds up to thousands of tons of carbon globally.
AI’s Carbon Footprint Is Growing Faster Here’s the scary part! The carbon footprint of AI is growing exponentially. According to Nature Journal, the total carbon emissions from AI computing could exceed 2.5 billion metric tons by 2030 if trends continue.
That’s more than the annual emissions of India! Whice is the world’s third-largest carbon emitter. Unless something changes, AI might become one of the top five industrial polluters on the planet within the next decade.
Can AI Ever Be Eco-Friendly?
There’s hope! But it’s limited. Some tech giants are trying to reduce the environmental damage by using renewable energy for their data centers, recycling waste heat and improving cooling technology.
However, as long as demand keeps exploding, more AI apps, more users, more data, these efforts may only slow, not stop, the damage. That’s the harsh logic behind why AI is bad for the environment!
